TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno called on event organizers (EO) and all parties to take lessons from the Halloween tragedy in Itaewon, South Korea, and the overcrowded music festival Berdendang Bergoyang in Senayan, South Jakarta. He also urged his staffers to evaluate permits for similar public agenda.

“I have assigned Ibu Rizki Handayani (the ministry’s deputy for tourism products and activities organizers) to conduct evaluation and brief event organizers to strictly comply with carrying capacity, early warning system, and make sure the availability of evacuation routes and CPR,” Sandiaga underlined.

According to him, every event organizer must be able to publish and manage crowds well to avoid accidents. He also reminded them to adhere to the cleanliness, health, safety, and environmental sustainability (CHSE) protocol.

In the Itaewon’s Halloween tragedy on Saturday, October 29, at least 154 people died as of Monday due to a crowd crush as people packed the streets and narrow alleys in Itaewon District to celebrate Halloween.

In Indonesia, the music concert Berdendang Beryang seized the public spotlight because of attendees at beyond capacity. The third day of the festival on Sunday, October 30, was thus canceled as ordered by the police. It was feared that the excess capacity could endanger visitors.

Sandiaga Uno claimed the ministry has summoned a number of event organizers and reminded them to be more disciplined by managing the capacity of visitors. “We have called all EOs for briefing,” he said.
