Jakarta Will Remain Attractive Despite Losing Capital Status, Sandiaga Says

2 April 2024 11:11 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaMinister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno said that Jakarta will remain attractive even after it no longer becomes Indonesia’s capital. This is in line with plans to move the capital to the Nusantara Capital City or IKN, and the passing of the Jakarta Special Regional Province Bill (RUU DKJ) by the House of Representative (DPR) on March 28.

"It will no longer serve as the capital, but it will be the leading economy," Sandiaga said in Jakarta on Monday, April 1.

"We [want to be] the fifth largest economic center in the world by 2045," he said, adding that Jakarta is now a locomotive with several national strategic projects such as Bumi Serpong Damai and Pantai Indah Kapuk, which will support the city's economic growth and allow it to maintain its status as the main choice for business and economic activities.

The Jakarta Special Regional Province Bill (RUU DKJ) was agreed upon by eight factions in the DPR, namely PDIP, Golkar, Gerindra, PKB, Democrat, Nasdem, PAN and PPP, to become the DKJ Law. The only faction that rejected it was the PKS.

With the passing of this law, Jakarta entered a new episode in its history, no longer having the status of the nation's capital, which would be assumed by Nusantara, currently being built in East Kalimantan.

The formulation of the DKJ Law is a consequence of Law No. 21/2023 on the National Capital (UU IKN). Although the DKJ law was passed as a first step in removing Jakarta’s status as Indonesia’s capital, for now the capital has not officially moved to Nusantara.
