TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vaksincom cybersecurity and digital forensic expert Alfons Tanujaya commented on the plan to utilize face recognition technology by state-railway operator Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI). Alfons noted that there are a number of aspects that need to be considered before the technology is implemented.

The first aspect according to Alfons is the level of accuracy. Alfons explained that face recognition has lower accuracy compared to other biometric systems such as fingerprints and iris recognition. Consequently, it will potentially result in a higher rate of false positives.

"However, as artificial technology develops, the accuracy level of face recognition will increase exponentially," Alfons wrote in a written statement on Friday, October 7, 2022.

A study by NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) discovered that facial recognition algorithms have an accuracy level of more than 99 percent, especially if backed by a complete visual database.

"A number of Japanese banks have started to make use of facial recognition at ATMs to identify the cardholder in order to prevent fraud," Alfons explained.

The second aspect that must be considered according to Alfons is data security. Alfons asserted that biometric data is essentially personal data protected under the recently passed Personal Data Protection Law. Alfons underlined that it is important to manage and secure such sensitive data properly.
