TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa on Tuesday announced that the death toll of the mass stampede that happened right after a football match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium on Saturday had increased to 131.
“As of today, six casualties were identified. Those who perished were initially 125 but have now grown to 131,” said the governor on October 4, Antaranews reported.
This was announced by the governor as she paid respect to one of the victims identified as Syahrullah.
“To all of the victims currently treated at hospitals and outpatients, I pray for their speedy recovery,” she said.
Additional victims of the football match gone awry were also confirmed by the Malang Regency Health Agency chief Wijanto Wijoyo, who confirmed there were six new casualties. He said that the recently identified victims that were not initially known as the victims were brought home by relatives before health officials were able to log their records.
