TEMPO.CO, Malang - The Indonesian government ensures that all medical expenses for the victims of the Kanjuruhan Malang football match tragedy are free. The Ministry of Health stated that the victims were not charged for medical treatment either in hospitals or other health facilities that handle them.

"So at this time, the Syaiful Anwar Hospital and the surrounding health centers are handled first (...) We continue to monitor the need for drugs and also health workers such as from specialists who are needed," stated Siti Nadia Tarmizi, head of the communication and public service bureau of the Ministry of Health, on Sunday, October 2, 2022.

The Ministry of Health previously reported temporary data on victims of the tragedy at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, so far, 129 people have died and 188 people have been slightly, moderately or seriously injured.

Nadia said that the government directed the entire treatment process to be handled at hospitals and health centers in Malang Regency, East Java. The victims have been evacuated to the nearest hospital, namely Kanjuruhan Hospital, Gondang Legi Hospital, Bhayangkara Hasta Brata Batu Hospital, Dr. Syaiful Anwar Hospital, Wajak Husada Hospital, Mitra Delima Hospital, Wava Husada Hospital and health centers.

She appealed to people who are still looking for their missing family to come to the post of Wava Husada Hospital and Kanjuruhan Hospital. So far, she claims the service process and patient referrals are going well.

The Kanjuruhan tragedy occurred on Saturday night, October 1, 2022, after the Arema FC vs. Persebaya Surabaya match ended with a score of 2-3. Aremania, the name for Arema FC supporters, did not accept the defeat.

The East Java Police Chief, Inspector General Nico Afinta, stated that the supporters then entered the pitch and attacked the football players and officials. The police then tried to dispel the crowd by shooting tear gases. However, the use of tear gas caused the audience to panic and made them all flee toward a narrow exit point. Those who tried to get out of the stadium to escape the tear gas got piled up at the exit point, resulting in them being suffocated, trampled and killed.
