TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Syafrin Liputo, head of Jakarta's Transportation Agency, said that MRT Jakarta's plan to acquire the shares of PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) was mandated during a limited meeting chaired by President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi several years ago. The government of Jakarta, he said, is trying to execute the instruction.

"Jakarta continues to make efforts to fulfill what the president has mandated in the meeting, which is the acquisition of KCI," he said when contacted, Thursday, September 29.

On January 8, 2019, Jokowi held a limited meeting to discuss Jabodetabek transportation management. At the time, the president said he wanted an integrated transportation system in the Jakarta metropolitan area or Greater Jakarta, known locally as Jabodetabek (Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi).

Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan then established PT Moda Integration of Jabodetabek Transportation, a joint venture between PT MRT Jakarta and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) that deals with transportation integration.

PT MRT Jakarta plans to acquire 51 percent of PT KCI's shares. The company will ask for Rp1.71 trillion in the form of regional capital investment (PMD) for 2023 to pay for the shares.

Syafrin said that the acquisition was initially targeted to happen this year. However, the fiscal capacity of the capital was affected by the pandemic, forcing the Jakarta government to seek other funding sources.

He said that the local government intensively communicates with PT KCI. But so far there has been no agreement about the planned acquisition.
