TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Regional Secretary Marullah Matali stated that the capital city is eyeing to become a climate-resilient city by 2030 as nine out of 10 ASEAN member countries that have ratified the Paris Agreement would follow similar steps soon to achieve the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goals by 2030.

“Jakarta has a target to become a climate-resilient city by 2030. This means it is not only committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent and ambitiously by 50 percent but also to achieving net zero in 2050,” said Marullah in Central Jakarta, Wednesday, September 28, 2022.

The city, he emphasized, is committed to having an urban system that is resistant to shocks and pressures caused by climate change. “We are the first regional government in Indonesia to consider the climate crisis as a real threat by implementing climate-resilient development in accordance with the 2020-2024 National Medium-Term Development Plan,” he explained.

According to Marullah, a number of policies have been issued with cross-sectoral involvement. Collaboration between ASEAN countries is also vital to achieve the NDC 2030 target and overcome the challenges of global climate change in Southeast Asia, which is one of the most vulnerable regions to be affected by climate change in the world.

On this basis, the Jakarta provincial government held a capacity-building workshop on controlling the impacts of climate disasters in Southeast Asia in collaboration with United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG Aspac). Held online for two days, September 28-29, 2022, the workshop is attended by government representatives from Southeast Asian countries.
