TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission III House of Representatives (DPR) has appointed Johanis Tanak in replacing Lili Pintauli Siregar as deputy to lead the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) but Tanak’s view toward restorative justice is feared by many to perpetuate impunity for corruptors.

Transparency International Indonesia (TII) researcher, Alvin Nicola, criticized the views presented by Johanis in front of the members of Commission III. According to her, Johanis' idea contradicts the UNCAC paradigm that positions corruption as an extraordinary crime.

Alvin also worries that Johanis would apply this approach as he leads the antigraft watchdog.

In his presentation, Johanis proposed a restorative justice approach to handling corruption cases. He stated that corruptors can get guarantees that they will not be prosecuted on the condition that they return three times the state losses caused by their actions.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator for Legal Affairs and Judicial Monitoring of Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), Lalola Easter Kaban, regretted the attitude of Commission III which did not delve into Johanis's explanation. He considered the fit and proper test this time just a mere formality.
