TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is currently in the process of growing its electric vehicle ecosystem with the development of lithium-ion batteries handled by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN).

This was confirmed by the agency’s head of nanotechnology and material research organization, Professor Ratno Nuryadi.

“Why are we developing lithium-ion batteries? Because there are several things that we highlight such as small size and lightweight, large capacity, better power, long service life, environmentally friendly, safe and most importantly low price," said Nuryadi at the Indonesia Electric Motor Show (IEMS) 2022.

Furthermore, Nuryadi added that in general, 30 to 40 percent of the pricing component of electric vehicles is batteries.

Selling electric vehicles at an affordable price, he added, electric vehicle manufacturers must use locally produced lithium-ion batteries to suppress the costs. Meanwhile, most of the electric vehicle components are still imported from abroad, which has affected the final price of electric vehicles in general.

Eksekutif Vice President Marketing and product EVP Quality Assurance PTT PLN, Hikmah Drajat has also shown support for this development and asserts that it is essential in realizing the government’s electrification program.
