TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) has officially passed the personal data protection bill in today’s plenary meeting, September 20, 2022. The 5th plenary session was chaired by House Deputy Speaker Lodewijk F. Paulus.

“Can the bill on personal data protection be approved and passed into law?” Lodewijk asked lawmakers in attendance, followed by their statement of approval.

The House Commission I chairman Abdul Kharis Almasyhari submitted the discussion report. He claimed that prior to the discussion, the commission had held a public hearing with academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and experts.

“After a very dynamic discussion process, there is a systematic change. The bill which initially consists of 15 chapters and 72 articles now has 16 chapters and 76 articles,” said Kharis.

Earlier, House Speaker Puan Maharani expressed hopes that the new regulation could protect the public from all forms of personal data misuse.

“This will be a milestone for Indonesia in protecting the personal data of its citizens from all forms of crime in the current digital era,” said Puan in her statement, Monday, September 19, 2022.

The PDIP politician also hoped that the government will soon enact this regulation. “So derivative rules, including the establishment of a supervisory agency that will protect people's personal data, can be quickly realized,” Puan Maharani said.
