TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) is set to pass the personal data protection bill today, September 20, 2022.

“The meetings of the House’s Steering Committee (Bamus) and the leaders decided to bring the bill to the Plenary Meeting tomorrow to be ratified as law,” said House Speaker Puan Maharani in Jakarta on Monday, September 19, 2022.

She pinned hopes that the new regulation will protect every citizen from all forms of personal data misuse. “The bill ratification will be a milestone for Indonesia in protecting the personal data of its citizens from all forms of crime in today's digital era,” said the PDIP politician.

The final draft bill which has been discussed since 2016 consists of 371 problem inventory lists (DIM) and produces 16 chapters and 76 articles. The number of articles increased by 4 from the initial government proposal at the end of 2019.

“So there will be no more tears caused by online loans that they didn’t ask for or doxxing that cause public uneasiness,” Puan said.

She also hoped the government will soon enact the bill so that its derivative rules, including the establishment of a supervisory agency to protect people's personal data, could quickly be realized.

"Through the law, the state will guarantee the people's right to their personal data security,” Puan Maharani said. She also thanked the government for its cooperation in drafting the personal data protection bill with the DPR.
