TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 12-year-old boy was taken into police custody on suspicion of shooting and wounding a student at a school in east Oakland, Monday, August 29. Authorities said that the shooting happened at about 13:30 at Madison Park Academy in East Oakland.

Responding officers found a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound and saw another boy running away, Oakland Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong said at a press conference.

The boy was taken into custody while the police secured the weapon he used.

"It saddens me to even think that a kid would bring a gun to school,” Armstrong said. "No parent wants to send their kids to school in the day and then be called saying your kid’s been shot. It’s the worst thing that you can hear."

The wounded student was rushed to a local hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

It remains unclear if the 12-year-old is a student at Madison Park Academy, which has around 750 kids enrolled. The school, located in the Sobrante Park neighborhood, was evacuated following the incident and the students sent home.

Over the last four days, there have been a series of violent incidents in the Oakland, in addition to the school shooting. Armstrong said six that people were killed in gun violence incidents across the United States.

"I'm afraid our community is becoming numb to this horrific behavior," Armstrong said as reported by SFGate. "Sadly, gun violence is impacting our schools, as well."
