TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin by telephone on Thursday, August 18, 2022. They discussed several issues from bilateral projects to preparations for the G20 summit.

Based on a written statement from the Russian Embassy in Jakarta, the two leaders talked of Russia-Indonesia relations with a focus on implementing the agreements reached during the Indonesian President's latest visit to Moscow. They promoted a number of major bilateral projects in the economic and trade sector.

Putin also informed Jokowi of Russia's joint efforts with Turkey and the UN Secretariat to stabilize the global grain and fertilizer market. “With regard to Indonesia's G20 presidency, preparations for the summit in Bali in November were also mentioned,” the embassy wrote without providing details.

The Russian President then directly congratulated Indonesia on Independence Day. He had shared messages with the Indonesian president previously.

Their latest meeting was at Kremlin on June 30, 2022, in the midst of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He also visited Kyiv and met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky one day earlier, on June 29, 2022.

President Jokowi emphasized that his visit to the two countries in eastern Europe was a peaceful mission. Nevertheless, high-level meetings including with Putin were also in an effort to strengthen bilateral ties.
