TEMPO.CO, JakartaSeveral countries in the world have colder temperatures, which are influenced by the latitude and altitude of the land. Areas further from the equator will receive less sunlight. In the meantime, air temperature drops by around one degree Celcius in every 100 meters of land elevation.

Citing the WorldAtlas page, here are the 10 coldest countries in the world, the majority of which are located in the northern part of the globe.

List of the Coldest Countries in the World

1. Canada

Canada maintained its status as the coldest nation in the world with an average daily temperature of 5.35 degrees Celsius. The northern part of Canada is also an arid region with very little precipitation, around 10 to 20 cm per year. The coldest temperature in Regina, the capital of the Saskatchewan province, was measured at minus 50 degrees Celsius on January 1, 1885.

2. Russia

Russia's climate from its northern to southern regions varies greatly. The average winter temperature in Russia is around minus 30 degrees Celsius. Not only is it freezing, but winter in Russia is also sometimes accompanied by strong winds and heavy snowfall.

3. Mongolia

Located between Russia and China, Mongolia experiences an extreme climate with winters reaching minus 30 degrees Celsius. As a high-altitude country in Asia, Mongolia maintains temperatures that never climb above zero degrees for months on end. Even so, Mongolia is also known as the "Country of the Blue Sky" because it experiences an average of 257 sunny days per year with clear skies.

4. Norway

Winter on the Norwegian coast reaches as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius and the average can reach around four degrees Celsius. However, temperatures in the northern part of Norway can reach minus 40 degrees Celsius at the lowest.

5. Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan has an average daily temperature of no more than eleven degrees Celsius. However, air temperatures vary widely across the region with some areas reaching highs of 35 degrees Celsius in summer.

6. Finland

Finland is one of the coldest countries in the world, with an average temperature of two degrees Celsius and minus 51.5 degrees Celsius at its coldest moment. The country is also known for its long winter season, lasting around 100 days in the southwest and 200 days in northern Lapland.

7. Iceland

Cold temperatures in the Icelandic highlands occur almost all year round and are accompanied by strong winds. However, the mild Gulf Stream and Atlantic Ocean temper the effect of cold winds. Winters in Iceland have recorded temperatures reaching minus 15 degrees Celsius.

8. Tajikistan

Tajikistan experiences dry summers, but these are often followed by winter temperatures ranging from minus one to eight degrees Celsius. Dushanbe city experiences heavy cloud from mid-October until mid-May. Although temperatures rarely drop, rainfall in Tajikistan is 13 millimeters every 31 days.

9. Sweden

With an average annual temperature of 2.1 degrees Celsius and the lowest of minus 53 degrees Celsius in the Malkovich area, Vasterbotten County, Sweden is one of the coldest countries in the world. Apart from that, the country which is located within the Arctic Circle experiences winter with an average temperature of minus 40 degrees Celsius.

10. Denmark

Winter in Denmark can last from December to March with frost and snow. The average temperature in Denmark is around 7.7 degrees Celsius and the coldest occurs in February, reaching zero degrees Celsius.
