TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto persuaded the Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport and Urban Development (JOIN) to be involved in developing a smart city of the new capital IKN Nusantara.

"We hope that JOIN can contribute to the development of a smart city system in our new capital city in Kalimantan," said Airlangga on Friday, July 22, 2022.

Airlangga hosted the visit of a member of the JOIN Directors Board Takuma Hatano at the Coordinating Ministry's Office in Jakarta. JOIN is a Japanese government-private-sponsored infrastructure investment fund company. It operates seven projects in Indonesia with a total value of around 28.6 billion Yen or equals USD 62.3 million.

The smart city development will integrate information technology for both hard and soft infrastructures as the new capital is expected to become a world-scale city.

In addition to building a smart city, Airlangga invited Japan to develop an environmentally friendly building and transportation system.

The chairman of the Golkar Party claimed that IKN Nusantara will be an ideal city and a role model for the development and management of cities in the archipelago and the world. It will also be a symbol of national identity, a sustainable city in the world, and a driving force for the Indonesian economy in the future.

"Sustainable energy resources and digital infrastructure are an integral part of modern urban development and smart cities," said Airlangga.
