TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Investment's Deputy of Investment Planning Indra Darmawan, said on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, that Indonesia has set an ambitious goal to raise the market share of electric vehicles in Indonesia to 25 percent of total vehicle sales in 2030. Indra believed that electric vehicles and their batteries will boost national investments.

"Unlike other countries, we don't use it for long. Three months ago we already had the first electric vehicle, on the streets of Jakarta, which was followed by subsequent productions," said Indra in a webinar titled "Indonesia's Ambition for the Awakening of the Electric Vehicle Battery Ecosystem" on Wednesday, June 29, 2022.

Citing data from the Ministry of Transportation, there are already 16,000 electric cars in Indonesia, which Indra insists is higher compared to its Southeast Asian neighbors.

"Other European countries, such as Sweden, Germany, and France, followed behind Norway. In China, 16 percent of total car sales are electric cars. As for the United States, only 5 percent and half of it is made by Tesla," Indra explained at the webinar.

At this rate, the global car sales growth target for electric cars in 2030 should reach 22 to 35 percent. However, looking at the reality of the current conditions, Indra predicts that only about 14 percent will be realized due to the global conflict situation between Ukraine and Russia which makes it difficult to accelerate the production of electric cars and their batteries due to supply constraints.
