TEMPO.CO, Manado - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) commented on the sudden abrasion in Amurang which caused heavy damage to 31 houses, five inns, a cafe, and one bridge.

A viral video circulating on social media showed the incident of lands and buildings sinking and plunging to the sea on Wednesday, June 15. Like flooding without rain, the buildings collapsed when the sea waves were calm.

“It is considered calm waves at only 0-0.5 meter high,” said the BMKG’s Maritime Meteorology Station official, Ricky Daniel Aror, on Thursday, June 16, 2022.

The weather was confirmed sunny and no heavy rain showered the region. Thus, it did not directly affect the incident. Ricky hoped that people and related agencies could look into the history of waves in the region as a reference for development.

The land erosion in Amurang severely damaged bridges and buildings on the coast on Wednesday afternoon, around 14:00 Central Indonesian Time (WITA). The incident precisely occurred in Uwuran Village and Bitung Village, Amurang District, South Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi. A total of 266 people from 69 families were evacuated.

The Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) suspected that the collapse of the bridge, boulevard roads, coastal safety walls, and residential houses was triggered by coastal abrasion.
