TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Member of Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR) from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction, Kurniasih Mufidayati, asked the Manpower Ministry not to escape the responsibility of protecting startup employees who were laid off, as well as partner workers.

“The layoffs of startup employees occur at the company’s business core so they have work contracts and industrial relations, not those in the partnership scheme as mentioned by the Manpower Ministry,” Kurniasih said in a statement, Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

Thus, she asserted that all the dismissed employees’ rights must be fulfilled in accordance with their employment contract.

Kurniasih acknowledged that the ministry could not handle the layoffs of employees of startup companies under the partnership status. Yet, in fact, not all employees were partner workers.

“So we ask the government to be active in handling it, don't avoid the responsibility in protecting citizens,” she asserted.

The PKS politician further demanded immediate regulation for the protection of gig workers or startup company partners, such as online motorcycle taxi drivers, in line with the growth of the digital economy in the archipelago.

Startup companies dismissing workers and planning to conduct layoffs were also expected to make a report to the local manpower agency (Disnaker) to ensure that employees’ rights are fulfilled.
