Statistics Indonesia: 11.53 Million Workers Still Affected by COVID-19 Pandemic

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Statistics Indonesia or BPS recorded that the number of Indonesian workers affected by COVID-19 has decreased compared to last year. As of February 2022, there were still 11.53 million working age population hit hard by the pandemic, lower than that in February 2021 at 19.1 million people.
“The condition of our workforce has improved in February 2022, but has not fully recovered yet as before the pandemic,” said BPS Head Margo Yuwono at a press conference on the release of official statistics today, May 9, 2022.
BPS noted that in February 2022 there was an increase in the number of workers by 4.55 million people.
Margo outlined that the working age population affected by the COVID-19 pandemic consisted of those who worked with reduced working hours at up to 9.44 million. There were also 580,000 people who did not have jobs, 550,000 people outside the working age population, and 960,000 unemployed people.
Margo went on to reiterate that the three sectors contributing the most to employment in February 2022 were agriculture with 1.86 million people, trade with 640,000 people, and processing industry with 850,000 people.
“The three sectors have contributed 62.76 percent [to the total employment],” Margo said.
