TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Civil Registry and Demographic Office (Disdukcapil) estimated there would be 150,000 to 180,000 new urban migrants in the city this year. The Office's chief, Budi Awaludin, said that most of them—around 50,000—will arrive in the capital during the peak period of people returning from their Eid exodus or mudik.

"We estimate that in May there will be a surge of urban migrants by 20,000 to 50,000 people," Budi Awaludin told Tempo on Wednesday, May 4.

According to the Civil Registry Office's population document service data, the number of migrants arriving in Jakarta had been declining over the past two years due to Covid-19.

In 2021, there were a total of 138,740 people who relocated to Jakarta, while in 2020 there were 113,814. These are lower than in 2019, when the recorded number of arrivals was 169,778 people, the highest in four years.

Budi predicted that this year's total number of new migrants will be around the same as in 2019, between 150,000 and 180,000 people, most of whom are expected to arrive in May or after the Eid homecoming season.
