TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A total of 3.6 million people were estimated to have left Jakarta by using four-wheeled vehicles to the islands of Java and Sumatra for Eid al-Fitr celebration in their hometowns.

“Based on the statistics of vehicles leaving Jakarta as of today (Thursday, April 26), there were around 74,000 vehicles yesterday (Wednesday, April 27). When it is all calculated, there have been 900,000 vehicles since D-7 [of Eid]. If it is multiplied with the number of people within the four days, there will be around 3.6 million vehicles,” said Jakarta Metro Police Chief Insp. Gen. Fadil Imran while inspecting Cikampek toll gate, Thursday, April 28.

According to the Transportation Ministry data, Fadil added, around seven million people would leave Jakarta during this year's Eid holiday season.

“Based on the statistical survey of the Transportation Ministry, around seven million people have left Jakarta riding four-wheeled vehicles, more than half of the population [in Jakarta],” he said.

Meanwhile, state-owned toll operator Jasa Marga reported 951,758 vehicles have left Jakarta since five to ten days before Eid or April 22-27, 2022.

The figure was the cumulative number of traffic flows from four main toll gates (GT), namely GT Cikupa (towards Merak), GT Ciawi (towards Puncak), and GT Cikampek Utama, and GT Kalihurip Utama (towards Trans Java and Bandung).

The total traffic volume increased by 9.4 percent compared to normal traffic in November 2021 with a total of 870,371 vehicles.

Of the total 951,758 vehicles leaving Jakarta during 2022 Eid al-Fitr holidays, Jasa Marga recorded that the majority amounting to 471,044 (49.5 percent) headed east for Trans Java and Bandung, 30.4 percent or 289,122 vehicles heading west for Merak Port, and the rest 20.1 percent or 191,592 vehicles heading south for Puncak.
