TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto asked the public to refrain from traveling abroad during the long holidays of Eid al-Fitr 1443 Hijr in order to prevent the transmission of COVID-19.

"During the long holidays, people are advised not to travel abroad because we know the [pandemic] situation in other countries is not the same as in Indonesia, so there is potential for virus transmission from abroad,” said Airlangga after a limited meeting on the evaluation of the public mobility restrictions (PPKM) led by President Joko Jokowi Widodo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday, April 18.

According to him, foreign countries still see an upward trend in COVID-19 cases, such as China’s Shanghai, which forced the local authorities to enforce a regional lockdown.

Airlangga emphasized that the pandemic is not yet over given the rising case numbers. He reminded that there should be no imported cases that could trigger a surge in local transmission.

The country’s COVID-19 Task Force, meanwhile, recorded that Indonesia’s trend on virus transmission has declined significantly as of mid-April 2022. On Sunday, April 17, Indonesia only reported 607 new daily cases and 58,278 active cases.
