TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) said the merger of Gojek and Tokopedia into GoTo did not indicate a monopoly or unfair business competition. The decision was taken after the agency conducted a thorough assessment of the aspects arising from the merger.

KPPU deputy chairman Guntur Syahputra Saragih said a merger in certain industries or businesses may indeed lead to market concentration. However, the merger of the two digital service technology companies has a multiset market so it does not create market concentration.

“The point is GoTo merger does not have a significant impact [on market concentration],” said Guntur as quoted from a press release on Tuesday, March 29.

KPPU director of mergers and acquisitions Aru Armando reiterated that the assessment team and the secretariat launched impact analysis related to the merger, such as market entry, business competition, unilateral conduct, anti-competition, and others.

Aru explained the results of the analysis showed that there was no indication of the potential for unfair business competition in the merger.

Gojek submitted the merger notification to KPPU on August 9, 2021.
