Prices of Cooking Oil and Sugar Rising ahead of Ramadan: Traders

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Market Traders Association (Ikappi) said prices of several commodities increased in line with the rising demand. They are garlic, chicken meat, eggs, sugar, cooking oil, and beef meat.
Ikappi Deputy Secretary-General Teguh Stiawan argued that the prices could not be prevented from rising due to the drop in the distribution of cooking oil and sugar.
“Bulk cooking oil, which is usually distributed three to four times per week, is now only twice per week, while the distribution of sugar has decreased by up to 40 percent,” said Teguh in a press release, Tuesday, March 29.
Based on Ikappi's report, the price of bulk cooking oil reaches Rp19,000-20,000 per liter, while that of sugar is in the range of Rp15,000 per kilogram. Besides, prices of other commodities saw a surge in demand at approximately 30 percent.
Teguh said the average price of garlic rose from Rp33,000 to Rp33,900 per kilogram. The price of chicken and beef in the market rose by Rp1,000 per kilogram to Rp39,000 and Rp141,000 respectively.
“[The prices of] these commodities are important to be maintained so that before Ramadan or D-3, the demand which is usually up by 50 percent can be anticipated,” Teguh underlined.
