Fukushima Earthquake; Indonesia Confirms Safety of Citizens in Japan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Embassy of Indonesia in Tokyo, Japan, contacted all Indonesian communities in regions affected by the devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit off the coast of Japan's eastern Fukushima prefecture on Wednesday night, March 16, at around 11:34 p.m. local time. The embassy confirmed that no Indonesian citizens became victims.

Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a written statement on Thursday, March 17, said Japan even issued a tsunami warning following the quake and canceled it Thursday at 5 am, March 17, 2022.

“Only a few citizens are affected by the blackout,” said the ministry’s Citizen Protection Director Judha Nugraha.

Based on data from the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, around 67,000 Indonesians resided in Japan. Meanwhile, Indonesians living around the earthquake's epicenter, West coast of Japan, amounts to 984 in Miyagi and 540 in Fukushima.
