Papua Closes Aminggaru Airport Following Shooting of TNI Soldier

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Papua closes temporarily Aminggaru Airport in Ilaga, Puncak, on Saturday, Feb. 19, following the shooting of an Indonesian air force (TNI AU) member by an armed criminal group or KKB.

"It is confirmed that the airport is closed temporarily following disturbance and shootout with KKB," said the Head of the Airport Management Unit at Aminggaru Ilaga Airport, Herman Sujito, on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Herman said that during the shootout near the airport, three planes were ready to land but they eventually returned to the airport where they departed. They were Susi Air commercial aircraft from Nabire and two cargo planes from Timika; Reven Air and Smart Air.

TNI's Danrem 173/PVB Brig. Gen. Taufan Gestoro, earlier mentioned that the shootout at the Papua airport happened in the morning at 07:30 local time. In the incident, a member of TNI-AU's Kopasgat/Paskhas was injured.

Previously, a shootout broke out on January 27, in Gome District, Puncak Regency, when three TNI-AD soldiers died.
