TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said the capital was set to host the meeting of the world’s city leaders at the 2022 Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit.

Anies said the summit would discuss a string of urban challenges caused by the pandemic, which was in line with the theme of the G20 Presidency of Indonesia: “Recover Together, Recover Stronger.”

Beginning the preparedness of the capital to host the event, Anies attended U20 talks at the Jakarta International Stadium together with Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto, who was present virtually.

Also attending the discussion were West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil as the U20 co-chair, Sintesa Group CEO Shinta Wijaya Kamdani as the B20 chair, Renewable Energy Society (METI) chair Surya Darma, and Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia founder Dino Patti Djalal, who acted as moderator.

“We discussed economic issues, digital transformation and renewable energy amid the COVID-19 pandemic,” Anies wrote in his social media account on Friday, February 18, 2022.

According to Anies, the U20 is a pillar that supported the G20, and that the gaps between nations were narrowing but those between nations and cities were quite the opposite.

“This is one problem that requires collective solutions from all other world city leaders at the upcoming U20 event,” he said.

The U20 calls on the Presidency, all Engagement Groups, Working Groups and other G20 stakeholders to collaborate to provide equal vaccine access, accelerate climate actions, and secure the transition towards net-zero carbon economy in order to deliver maximum, positive impact on the susceptible and the marginalized, particularly in urban areas.

Anies Baswedan said Jakarta is committed to advocating the transition towards net-zero emissions by cementing its mass transportation system as the backbone of public mobility in the capital.
