TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Development Agency (Bappenas) Head Suharso Monoarfa on Wednesday said the government is pushing for the future new capital city area in East Kalimantan to be dominated by green spaces and only use a small portion of the 256.1 thousand hectares as a built-up area.

“Maybe out of the 256.1 thousand hectares, only 20 percent of the land will be turned into development areas,” said Suharso to Tempo on January 25.

He said the initial plans will see the 20 percent built up area mostly consisting of building structures and the rest will be public areas such as parks and sports areas.

The actual government master plan states that 75 percent of the Nusantara capital will be green spaces that comprise conservation areas (28.5 percent), agriculture land (21.7 percent), productional forest area (15.1 percent), and 6.6 percent of the original space will be preserved.

“Cities in the world are heading towards that. Coinciding with this, we will restore the environment there,” said the Bappenas Head.

In one of the government’s presentations about the new capital move, Nusantara will hone the concept of a smart, green, and sustainable city, which aims at becoming one of the “lungs of the planet.”
