Jakarta Gears Up to Be Economic Powerhouse After Losing Capital Status

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta economic and finance assistant Sri Haryati on Thursday said the city administration is designing a plan to create Jakarta as the future global economy and business hub after Indonesia's capital city will be moved to East Kalimantan.
The plan that was announced at a governance seminar on Thursday will be included in the regional development plan (RPD) of 2023-2026. It will be a coincidence with the end of the term for governor Anies Baswedan and deputy governor Ahmad Riza Patria in October 2022.
“The country’s capital move to East Kalimantan will see Jakarta hold the only role of a global economy and business hub,” said Haryati at City Hall on January 27.
She said this announcement will hopefully answer questions that arose regarding Jakarta’s future as a city in Indonesia once it no longer houses the central governance. Haryati said the city will be projected to be a global-scale business-run city that can compete with leading cities in the world.
"Jakarta's vision in the future is not only to continue what already exists but how we can be in the orbit of the world's metropolitan cities," said the economic and finance assistant.
