TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has officially named the Regent of Langkat, Terbit Rencana Perangin Angin, as a suspect of graft. The regent is believed to have accepted a bribe following a KPK sting operation on Tuesday, January 18.

KPK deputy chairperson Nurul Ghufron explained that his team confiscated Rp786 million from the regent in one of its sting operations.

“The money is believed to be a small portion of what Terbit accepted,” he said at the anti-graft headquarters on January 20.

The arrest initially started after the KPK received information about the regent, who has Rp85 billion in personal wealth, who allegedly took in graft money. According to Ghufron, the KPK sting op team immediately followed a number of people related to the crime.

They followed a contractor named Muara Perangin Angin who had just withdrawn money from a bank in Langkat, North Sumatra. They also followed three of Terbit’s most trusted people and relatives to a coffee shop, which eventually became the place where the transaction took place.

However, as they traveled to Terbit’s house, the KPK team found the regent was not at home, which they believe had attempted to flee arrest. Fortunately, he took himself in at the Binjai Police headquarters and was immediately questioned by KPK investigators.
