Jakarta Logs COVID-19 Growth; Mostly Omicron from Travelers

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - COVID-19 cases logged in the capital city of Jakarta are seeing a significant rise after the discovery of the Omicron variant. Head of the Jakarta Health Office’s Disease Prevention and Control Dwi Oktavia on Sunday said there were 407 cases detected in Jakarta as of January 9.

A total of 350 of them, which constitutes 86 percent, are confirmed Omicron cases and had previously traveled abroad, while 57 of them came from local transmission.

Meanwhile, January 7 recorded 271 Omicron cases which were mostly contributed by international travelers and 40 local transmission cases.

Active coronavirus cases on Sunday saw 1,874 people being treated and undergoing isolation, which is a rise compared to Saturday. A total of 1,415 of these came from people who traveled overseas.

The Jakarta Health Office is currently increasing its tracing efforts to curb the spread of the Omicron variant that is much more transmissible compared to the Delta variant. Mass swab tests were conducted in the West Jakarta area of Krukut, Tamansari, which resulted in 34 probable cases of Omicron.
