TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo expected the House of Representatives (DPR) to immediately ratify the bill on sexual violence or RUU TPKS so as to create a strong and comprehensive legal instrument in preventing and regulating sanctions for perpetrators of sexual assault.
“I hope the bill on sexual violence will soon be ratified so it can provide maximum protection for victims of sexual violence in the country,” said the President as broadcasted on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel, Tuesday, January 4.
The government, he underlined, is committed to supporting the ratification of the bill through the establishment of the TPKS Task Force, which has been making coordination with the House of Representatives (DPR) Legislation Body or Baleg.
“I have asked the task force to immediately draft an inventory list of problems against the bill being prepared by the DPR so that joint discussions will get to the main points more quickly to provide legal certainty and guarantee protection for victims,” he added.
The bill was proposed in 2016 and had been relisted in the National Legislation Program in January 2021. “Therefore, I have ordered the Minister of Law and Human Rights and the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection to coordinate immediately and consult with the DPR in the discussion of the bill on the sexual violence to produce accelerated steps,” said Jokowi.
