Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G Plate during an online discussion on Indonesia Outlook 2022 held by Tempo, December 8, 2021.

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Communication and Information (Kominfo) Ministry had shut down access to 5,429 online loan sites reported by the public from 2018 to December 26, 2021. One of the reasons for the access blocking was due to misuse of personal data.

“The Kominfo Ministry continues to supervise cellular operators in order to maintain that personal data are managed based on laws and regulations,” said Kominfo Minister Johnny Gerald Plate in a written statement quoted by Tempo on Thursday, Dec. 30.

The blocking was carried out on various platforms, such as websites, social media, up to file-sharing platforms. Johnny acknowledged that issues on private data misuse in the financial services sector are still challenging.

The ministry, he added, would thus continue to tighten supervision over data management to prevent widespread misuse of the data.

Johnny also asked the public to file a complaint if finding indications of data misuse via the ministry’s email pengendalianaptika@kominfo.go.id. People could also make a report to aduankonten.id dan aduankonten@kominfo.go.id if they find contents violating the regulations.

As for complaints regarding telecommunications services, the report could be issued directly via the Kominfo Ministry's Twitter account @aduanPPI. “This is for reports related to disturbing calls or messages, including advertisements for unwanted offers and fraudulent messages,” Johnny concluded.
