TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) chairman Ahmad Taufan Damanik outlined a number of notes on cases of human rights throughout 2021 which are dominated by issues of agrarian conflicts and violence committed by law enforcement officers.

According to him, agrarian conflicts occurring in Indonesia were not only related to lands but also natural resources. The commission, he added, received many reports of such conflicts related to plantations and mining.

“Other than conflicts between private or state plantations and local residents, we find more conflicts involving state-owned plantations,” said Taufan on Tuesday, December 28.

Additionally, he opined that cases of law enforcers brutality are still happening. Data obtained by the commission showed that violence against detainees often occurred besides violence during the legal process of the case.

Taufan cited an example, the death case of an inmate at the North Bengkulu Police Detention Center some time ago. “This shows that the management of criminal penalties still needs improvement,” he argued.
