TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eleven Indonesians died in Wednesday's boat sinking incident in the waters of Johor, Malaysia. The boat was carrying 50 people on board, allegedly illegal migrants. As of Thursday morning, December 16, dozens were still missing.

The Indonesian Consulate General for Johor Baru said that the shipwreck was found early morning on December 15 by Malaysian maritime surveillance officers and the Johor City Police, around 05:00 local time. It is believed that the vessel departed from Tanjung Uban, Riau.

"We received information that the boat was carrying 50 Indonesians," the consulate said in a statement to the media.

Fourteen people survived the incident, one is in critical condition and is being treated at the Hospital Kota Tinggi. The others are being questioned by the police.

There are strong suspicions that the boat was carrying migrants illegally, since Malaysia still closes its borders for migrant workers.

The government, local police, and the consulate general are still looking for the dozens of other people still missing.
