362 Tons of Dead Fish Gathered from Volcanic Lake Maninjau

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Fisheries and Food Security Agency of West Sumatra on Monday said 362 tons of fish had died in Lake Maninjau, which the agency suspected was caused by the lack of oxygen in the volcanic crater lake.
“We obtained the data from floating net cage farmers in four Nagaris or traditional villages,” said the head of the agency, Rosva Deswira, on December 13, Antaranews reported.
According to him, this latest data saw an increase as on Sunday afternoon the amount of dead fishes amounted to 350 tons. These dead fish came from the parrot fish and goldfish from dozens of fish cultivators.
“The financial losses amount to roughly Rp7.2 billion by assuming its worth of Rp20 thousand per kilogram,” he explained.
The sudden mass deaths happened after the region was showered by heavy rainfall which caused oxygen depletion in the volcanic lake.
“We urge farmers to gather the dead fish and bury them to avoid polluting the body of water and air in the region,” said Deswira, who claimed to have warned farmers against cultivating fish from August to January due to stormy weather.
