TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) head Dwikorita Karnawati announced an early warning of potential high tides in several parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta on December 18-22, 2021.
“High tides potentially cause coastal flooding or tidal flooding,” said Dwikorita in an online press conference, Wednesday, December 8.
She explained the rainy season, the La Nina phenomenon, and the Asian monsoon triggered an increase in sea levels. Besides, there will be a full moon phase on December 19.
BMKG noted that tidal flooding occurred in 19 regions during December 8-10, 2021. The regions will likely be hit by the flooding again on December 18-22.
The 19 regions are the Natuna Islands, Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, Lampung, Banten, and Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Java, West Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and South Kalimantan, West Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, Ternate, Halmahera, northern West Papua, and northern Papua.
