TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bali will be hosting the World Tourism Day 2022 activities under the theme of "Rethinking Tourism" scheduled to take place in September 27, 2022.

The 24th session of UNWTO General Assembly on November 30 - December 3, 2021, in Madrid decided that Indonesia will host the event. In the same occasion, Nglanggeran tourism village in Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, was also named as one of UNWTO's Best Tourism Villages, along with other 43 villages in 32 countries.

Nglanggeran tourism village is acknowledged for its natural resources and cultures, as well as the innovative and transformative actions and commitments toward the tourism development that are in line with SDGs. It offers various eco-tourism activities.

According to the statement of Foreign Affairs Ministry, Indonesia shows a huge interest in the global tourism development agendas, especially the tourism recovery post the Covid-19 pandemic. Indonesia, in the meeting, also pointed out the the impacts of th pandemic toward the people work in tourism sector, especially women.

UNWTO general assembly is a biennial meeting of its country members to discuss the world's tourism policies.

At the UNWTO General Assembly, the members agreed that tourism is the pillar of development that absorbs many jobs, is inclusive and sustainable. Therefore, vaccines availability must be pushed onward to accelerate global tourism recovery post the Covid-19 pandemic.

UNWTO’s membership includes 159 Member States, 6 associate members and 504 affiliate members and 2 observers (Vatican and Palestine). Indonesia has been joining the UNWTO since 1975.
