Strong Earthquake Jolts Garut This Morning

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake measuring 3.7 magnitudes jolted Garut of West Java this morning, December 1. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the quake at 07:05 local times. Sourced on land, the tremor was felt strongly in some areas.

Based on the analysis results, BMKG concluded it was triggered by the activity of the South Garut or Garsela Fault.

The strong shaking was felt in the Pasirwangi, Kamojang, and Paseh areas at level IV of the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale and in Garut City, Pangauban, Bayongbong, Cikajang, Samarang, Ciparay at MMI level III.

There has been no report thus far of damage and casualties following the quake.

According to the Head of Tangerang Regional BMKG II Hendro Nugroho, the quake’s epicenter was located at 7.26 degrees south latitude and 107.69 degrees east longitude. “Precisely on land at a distance of 23 kilometers southwest of Garut,” he said in a written statement, Wednesday.

The earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers or categorized as a shallow one. Until 07:14 local time, BMKG did not record any aftershocks.
