Jakarta Governor Laments Provincial Minimum Wage Formula

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said before a group of protesters at the City Hall on Monday that he already sent a request for a review to the Manpower Minister against the 2022 provincial minimum wage (UMP). He believed the formula was not compatible with the situation in the capital.
“This formula is not fit for Jakarta,” the Jakarta Governor told the protesters before the City Hall on November 29, 2021.
A group of laborers gathered in front of the City Hall, demanding the governor revoke its latest regulation regarding the 2022 provincial minimum wage that many deemed too little. Next year will see the capital city’s minimum wage increase by only Rp37 thousand.
The Jakarta administration said the decision was based on Law No.11/2020 on Job Creation and the Government Regulation No.36/2021. The governor also said he intended to provide justice for laborers and “go hand-in-hand [with laborers] to fight for the increase of the Provincial Minimum Wage from the current formula."
In his letter to the Manpower Minister, Anies Baswedan conveyed that the latest minimum wage did not fulfill the sense of justice compared to the situation on the field. The Rp37 thousand or 0.85 percent increase does not correspond with the inflation in the capital city of 1.14 percent.
