TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Yogyakarta Covid-19 Task Force reported surging cases in several regencies on Thursday, 25 November. One of them is Gunungkidul Regency, where seven students of a special-needs school were infected.

The Task Force's spokesperson, Berty Murtiningsih, said that there have been an addition of 79 cases today. "The total number of active cases is 469," Betty said.

Berty said that most of the new cases were recorded in Bantul with 37, Kabupaten Sleman 24, and Kulon Progo with 11.

Meanwhile, the local head office chief Dewi Irawaty said that a cluster broke at a special-needs school (SLB) in Gunungkidul Regency. Dewi said the cluster is still being traced.

At least seven students from SLB State 1 Gunungkidul were tested positive for Covid-19. The cases were found after mass PCR tests on 129 students conducted on November 22 and 23.

Although the students were asymptomatic, the school halted all on-site activities and returned to online learning, at least until December 6.

The surge in new cases came as quite a shock, considering Yogyakarta has had relatively low daily cases throughout November at just around 30 per day on average.

However, the spike in cases has not affected bed occupancy rates in referral hospitals, which is still under 10 percent.
