TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metro Police on Wednesday said the city’s traffic congestion has effectively returned as the Covid-19 public mobility restriction or PPKM had been loosened to Level 1. A police representative said the spike in vehicle traffic reaches 80 percent.

“The average traffic volume increased by 40 percent compared to the stricter PPKM with some areas even growing by 80 percent,” said Metro Jaya Police traffic director Grand Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo to Tempo.co on November 24.

Areas that have seen an increase in vehicle population include popular areas such as Daan Mogot in West Jakarta and Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) in North Jakarta.

“This increase is the consequence of lowering the PPKM level that has affected public mobility,” he added.

Police have expected this and have prepared for the public mobility spike by imposing traffic restrictions such as the odd-even number plate policy across 13 public streets. This policy limits the vehicles that can operate based on their unique number plates.
