PDIP Slams Jakarta MUI over Plan to Form Cyber Army to Defend Anies Baswedan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ima Mahdiah, a PDIP faction member at the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD), criticized the Jakarta Regional Ulema Council (MUI) for its plan to establish a cyber army team in order to defend Governor Anies Baswedan. She opined that MUI as a forum for Islamic organizations should not do so.
Ima observed that Jakarta residents are still polarized due to the previous gubernatorial election, and what Jakarta MUI will do might further expand the polarization.
“MUI is the parent of Islamic organizations. It should not get involved in practical politics that widens the gap,” said the PDIP politician when met at her office, Central Jakarta, Monday, November 22.
According to Ima, the cyber army is unnecessary since each agency has been granted a budget to promote programs and disseminate the success of Anies’ programs.
“In my opinion, MUI should instead provide mental assistance to Jakarta residents, especially those who are previously polarized,” said Ima.
The Jakarta MUI recently came under the public spotlight. After the Jakarta DPRD approved a grant of Rp10 billion for the organization, Jakarta MUI chairman Munahar Muchtar announced a plan to form a cyber army team to defend Anies Baswedan and other figures who have contributed to city development on social media.
