TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Government is still investigating rampant COVID-19 cases at schools. Starting from Sedayu subdistrict in Bantul Regency, the infection cluster was deemed to have spread to three other neighboring regencies since late October.

The provincial government issued a preliminary suspicion that there was negligence of the school-level COVID-19 task force in enforcing the predetermined health protocols, particularly allowing crowds during school breaks.

“If the learning hours is more than 2.5 hours, there is usually a break, the school canteen will be open and students will flock it,” said Yogyakarta Secretary Kadarmanta Baskara Aji on Wednesday, November 10

According to Aji, the regional government would evaluate face-to-face learning at schools. “Especially the evaluation on the school hours which will be cut to a maximum of 2.5 hours,” he added.

Aji went on to say that based on the findings of the widespread COVID-19 clusters at schools, not only were students but also teachers were carriers of the virus. In Sleman Regency, for example, there were 64 students and 15 teachers who have been tested positive for the coronavirus.
