TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The awarding of the 2021 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI 2021) is held tonight, November 10. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Makarim attended the event. Actresses Dian Sastrowardoyo, Luna Maya, Cut Mini, and Niniek L. Karim were also present.
Jokowi arrived at the venue just before the playing of the national anthem Indonesia Raya. He was welcomed and stood next to Reza Rahadian as the committee chairman of FFI.
Minister Nadiem was present with his wife Franka Franklin. On that occasion, Nadiem expressed his happiness as the government bestowed the title of national hero on the country’s historical figure in the film industry, Usmar Ismail. The title declaration was made in line with the National Heroes Day on November 10.
“[Usmar Ismail is] incredible, the father of cinema, a source of inspiration, a humanist, a hero in developing our cinema culture,” said Nadiem.
Nadiem also hoped that FFI would be a stepping stone for Indonesian cinema to the global stage. He further expressed gratitude that Indonesian cinema could present at overseas festivals. “This is remarkable to support FFI as a platform for culture diplomacy because cinema is the fastest way to achieve it,” he said.
