Papua Police Name 22 Suspects in Yahukimo Deadly Riot

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Papua Police named 22 suspects in the riot broke out in Yahukimo District. The authorities continue to look into the case.

“The number of suspects can potentially grow as currently, there are 22 people named suspects,” said National Police Main Headquarters spokesperson Brig. Gen. Rusdi Hartono on October 6.

A riot broke out in the region on October 3 at around 12:45 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT). The reports suggest it was caused by tribal conflict between the Kimyal people which attacked the Yali people.

Rioters reportedly burned a number of buildings and a hotel, and were equipped with traditional weapons such as arrows and machetes used to attack opposing parties. The incident killed six people and injured dozens of others.

The National Police spokesperson assured the situation in Yahukimo is gradually returning to normal with additional Armed Forces and Police personnel mobilized to secure several locations in the Papuan district. Roughly over 3,000 residents have evacuated to the local police headquarters, Churches, and Military Commands.
