Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X. Doc. Yogyakarta Provincial Government

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yogyakarta governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X on Wednesday has suggested central government to open each and every tourist destinations amidst the enactment of a public mobility restriction (PPKM), which he argues can prevent unmonitored tourists entering sites that are still legally closed.

“The current situation sees many reckless tourists entering Yogyakarta that are not monitored since tourist site operators are not there to guard destinations that are still actually closed,” said the governor on September 29.

He said a trial period for such a scenario is currently tested across seven tourist destinations in Yogyakarta but reports keep coming suggesting visitors would enter sites that are officially not yet opened.

“The tour buses would arrive in the middle of the night, at dawn, when people were sleeping. Which makes this situation not easy to monitor,” he said.

Sri Sultan believes that entirely opening tourism sites will be more effective in imposing stricter health protocols as it would make the tourism management present at the location and able to monitor mobility of visitors. Covid-19 could potentially spread more rampant if tourists continue to arrive without proper monitoring.
