DPR Passes ASEAN Agreement on E-Commerce Ratification

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In today's plenary meeting, the House of Representatives or DPR passed the bill on the ratification of the ASEAN Agreement on Electronic Commerce (AAEC). The agreement was signed by 10 ASEAN members on 22 January 2019.
"Is this bill approved to become a law?" meeting leader Sufmi Dasco Ahmad asked the participants. Everyone agreed without interruptions, and Sufmi truck his gavel, marking the passing of the bill into a law.
The bill now awaits President Joko Widodo's signature for it to become fully legitimate as a law.
Prior to the gavel tap, the DPR's Trade Commission deputy Mohamad Haekal asked the commission to pay attention to the negative aspects of this agreement. He hopes that the government would "prioritize national interest."
The Commission, which oversees trade, industries and SOEs, also asked the government to prepare short and long term programs following the issuance of this new law. That way, Indonesian business actors—particularly MSME players—can compete in the ASEAN stage.
Indonesia and nine ASEAN members agreed to the AAEC in 2019 in Hanoi, Vietnam. The agreement document, containing 19 articles, is accessible to the public via ASEAN's official website.
