City Official Unveils 3 Threats Lead to Jakarta Sinking

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Water Resource Agency Head Yusmada Faizal revealed three threats leading to high flooding in the city or in other words, Jakarta sinking.
He said the first is the overflow at the upstream which then passes 13 rivers across the city. “The threat possibly comes from the overflowing rivers,” he said in an online discussion on Thursday, September 2.
The second, Yusmada added, is the high rainfall. According to him, rainwater could not be directly channeled into the sea. The reason is that the land condition in some coastal areas is below sea level.
The rainwater then must be channeled into reservoirs and then pumped into the sea. “This shows that Jakarta can no longer fully channel water by gravity,” he explained.
The third condition is if there is a phenomenon of rising seawater, the overflow of seawater will sink Jakarta. “Those are three fronts that threaten to flood Jakarta,” he said.
Previously, the issue of the Jakarta sinking emerged again after US President Joe Biden warned that Indonesia’s capital was in danger of sinking in the next 10 years.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan once said that the potential for Jakarta to sink is not only due to rising sea levels, but also land subsidence.
