TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Army has ended the much-protested practice of virginity tests on women applying to be cadets. The Army's Pusat Kesehatan (health center) chief, Maj. Gen. Budiman, said that the Army has officially eliminated the testing of hymens to determine recruits' virginity.

"The word 'hymen' has been eliminated from the physical test forms," Budiman said in an online discussion held by Change.org on Wednesday, September 1.

Budiman said that the decision is set forth in technical guidance on the TNI Army's examination of the body test, number B/1372/VI/2021, dated June 14, 2021. Not only the 'virginity test' was removed, a number of other tests such as the upper limb test were removed, down motion, vision, to the teeth, also undergo adjustments.

However, Budiman said that external genitalia examination is still carried out for medical purposes, such as detecting disorders, thus prospective cadets can receive treatments immediately.
